Richard Jospeh Downs, 72, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Sunday, May 17, 2020 at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, MA after a period of failing health. He was the son of George and Helen (McIsaac) Down, born in Boston MA, February 10, 1948.
Richard entered Perkin School for the Blind, Watertown, MA in September of 1953. From the very beginning he was an active person. He started with a four-year hitch as a Boy Scout, member of Glee Club since his sophomore year. Richard’s interest in singing blossomed when he joined the group Ollie and the Orbits. He has many appearances with this popular rock ’n’ roll group. Richard was a strong athletic. He was a member of the track squad and played in intramural athletics. He was a member of the Drama Club and charter members of the S.S.P.C., the Student Social Planning Committee. He took up skiing in school and enjoyed the sport.
He continued his training after graduating from the Perkins in the field of pain tuning. He had several jobs for many years until his retirement. Richard was known as a person of tremendous drive and desire to succeed. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to radio broadcasts, visits to Boston and going to restraunts.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of Brockton Area Transit Authority; he represented the interest of all disabled persons. Richard was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton MA and was highly involved in the community where he had many friends. His longtime friend Mary Lou Malone, Janice Bruce, Stoughton VNA and Council on Aging Staff, were enriched by having known him.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will not be a traditional service. There will be a Memorial Mass at Immaculate Conception Church 122 Canton St. Stoughton MA. On Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. All welcome to attend.
